Welcome back Supergirl fans! We are so excited for tonight's all new episode of Supergirl! Thomas Lennon has been one of those landmark casting choices and his version of Mr. Mxyzptlk being an ally and non-romantic partner to Supergirl has brightened our days and our screens! Tonight, Mxy returns to help Supergirl battle Nyxly who has regained her magical powers! Magic, like Kryptonite, seems to work against Kryptonians and Supergirl will need Mxy's magic to help get control of the situation. Of course, there were promises of some singing as well and we are always looking forward to that! Here's what stood out to us:
- Mr. Mxyzptlk: Mxy arrives and fights off the wrath of Nxyly, not now knowing that the princess escaped. He saves Kara, and they go back to base to debrief the others. Mxy explains that imps can track each other's energies. Instead of breaking things down, Mxy decides a song and dance will do to explain the history of Nxyly. He also explains the purpose of the all stone and the evil imp Jarrod who attempted to claim the world. Nxyly uses a crystal ball to find seven totems that will bring back the all stone. For the plan to work, she needs the blood of Jarrod, which Mxy has. Nia has another vision of crows eating Mxy, which Brainy notices. She attempts to dodge his questions, but decides to tell Brainy about the deal she made. Brainy suggests to tell Kara, and knows she will understand Nia. Lena, who is in Newfoundland, gets a call from Andrea. Lena asks if Andrea found out who the other women in the photo with her mother are. Andrea agrees to keep searching for their identities. Lena stops by an inn, but is quickly tossed out when they find out she is searching the history of her mother. The innkeepers seem disturbed, and whispers something about being a witch. The super friends discuss how to trap Nxyly. Mxy suggests the warp gun, but it isn’t powered. Kara reminds him that the shard Mon-El had could power it, but it was destroyed. He tells Kara he simply hid it, and she flies off to retrieve it.
- Menagerie: Nxyly is taking control of the Menagerie's ship. She dispatches the alien who owns the ship with her powers. Lena can't find a room in the city where she was born and when she heads to a local pub to find out why, she is also kicked out because the town seemed to hate her mother.
- The Coven: Lena is able to ask enough questions to disarm the pub owner. She begins to tell the story of their mothers. They were in some kind of coven. Without the ability to use his magic, Mxy isn't able to be very helpful and he is feeling it from team Supergirl. Nxyly has unleased a huge monster cat on National City where team Supergirl attempts to bring the cat down. Dreamer attempts to suck the cat into the dream world. Supergirl uses her heat vision like a laser pointer to help push the cat into the portal. Nxyly shows up to mock team Supergirl and demands they bring Mxy to the park in two hours.
- Lena's Past: Lena is upset by what she learned at the pub, she is headed home but Andrea convinces her to stay. Seeing Kara beat herself up about Nxyly, Dreamer confesses to Kara. Lena uses GPS to walk into the woods to find the outcast that might know more about her story. She finds a woman who's been waiting there for Lena all this time. Lena discovers she comes from a long line of witches. When one of the husbands started beating his wife, the witches burned the house down. It was an accident but the town turned on them. Lena's mother escaped to the States where she met Lionel Luthor. Dreamer and Supergirl have a plan. Dreamer is going to use Brainy's image inducer to get close to Nxyly and put the power dampening cuffs on her.
- 5th Dimensional Problems: The team's plan fails and Nyxly is pissed. Nxyly summons a Kryptonite breathing dragon and traps team Supergirl. Just as the dragon comes to kill, Mxy shows up to save the team. Before Nxyly can trap Mxy, Supergirl appeals to Nxyly to be better. She disarms Alex who had the Phantom Zone Projector and Supergirl picks it up. Just as Supergirl is prepared to send Nxyly back, Mxy asks her not to. He is pulled into the orb but it seems like Mxy might have a plan.
In the final wrap up moments, the team mourns the loss of Mxy, but they are convinced they can get him back somehow. Lena looks through old photos of her mother in her coven. While in the cave, it is revealed that Lena has her mother's gift. Magic doesn't follow the laws of physics and Lena struggles to understand. Back on the menagerie ship, the alien there convinces Nxyly to join forces. They are looking for the totems.

Quoting Romulus:
I hope we really haven't heard the last of Mxy.
I could do without the witchcraft storyline for Lena. Having a brilliant scientific mind just wasn't enough, it seems.
Yes, Kara's hope speeches do not always work and Nyxly made it look like it was working and then just when it looked like it worked, Nyxly let SuperGirl know it did not (I think the actress that plays Nyxly is fantastic - her facial expressions are some of the best I've seen on the show). I think season one when she was just starting out is where her speeches really did not work too well (Reactron, Astra, Toyman, LiveWire, I was thinking Vartox (but she never tried to convince him of being better). So as seasons progressed she did get more people to listen to her but again not all of them complied.
I definitely agree with you - it also reminded me of the episode "The Martian Chronicles - (best known as the Alex missed Kara's birthday episode) when the White Martian was trying to kill M'gann and the DEO had gathered around the table and one of the agents thought Vasquez was a white martian and pointed his gun at her - then he thought Alex was a white martian and pointed his gun at her and SuperGirl jumped in front of Alex and told the agent with the gun "now you really better put that away." I love the protectiveness that the sisters have for each other.
They might need that PZ projector, as Mxy correctly pointed out it is an option for dealing with Nyxly. He just shouldn’t have been pointing it around casually like that.
By unveiling that totem story, that basically tells the audience what will happen in the next few episodes and communicates that probably nothing interesting will happen on the villain front till the totems have been collected. So you might as well skip those parts. I think season 3 is the only season that made the hunt for different parts interesting because there the "parts" were people in their own right, who could be good or evil in their own right and the question loomed what Team Supergirl should do with them.
The giant cat was inspired, and the best part was SG teasing it with a laser!
Nia confessing to Kara and being forgiven was a perfect scene that encapsulates much of what this show is about at its core.
Well, Lena certainly got some answers about her mother! I am happy that they included that missing piece of her story. About her using these powers, I will wait and see. Yes, it could merit an eyeroll, but it could also become useful in subduing Nyxly and also Lex, who we know will show his face again. So I'm not going to jump to any conclusions, and will judge it after it plays out.
Kara tried to hope speech her and Nyxly said nope. That rarely happens to Kara. Let me think it didn’t work on pestilence but she wasn’t a big bad. We don’t know if Astra would’ve come around but Alex had to kill her, and she never tried to reason with Non. I’m not sure if Rhea got a full on hope speech. Kara certainly hasn’t tried to reason with Lex. Nyxly might be the best villain the show has ever had. I appreciate that they didn’t drag out the Nia doesn’t want to admit to Kara that she freed Nyxly thing.
I would like to thank whoever thought of the giant cat and laser eyes thing, that had me laughing.
That actually sucks!
