The Gauntlet Recap

Guardian's debut was quite the success and the people of National City are excited to see their new hero. For team Supergirl, the ripples of that debut remain felt as Alex continues to give Kelly space to digest all that is going on in her life. Nyxly, however, has not slowed in her grand plan of revenge against those in the fifth dimension and against Supergirl. With magic being as strong as Kryptonite to Kryptonians, Supergirl may need to rely on her friend's new powers (Lena) to get the upper hand. The rules of magic don't follow those of science, and being a brilliant mind in her own right, these new rules may be quite difficult to learn for Lena! Did the team get the upperhand? Here's what stood out to us:

  1. Lena's Return: Lena returns and is caught up on the chaos. She and Kara go to the Fortress of Solitude for advice from a Kryptonian Witch named Vida, about courage totem. Museum scientist says a former partner pulled funding for her experiment. The museum has received the shipment that contained the totem of wisdom. Nyxly, now aware that the totem is in the city, gears up to steal it from the museum. Andrea berates William for not being able to find the Superfriends, causing him to have unknown flashes of Supergirl. Superfriends return to the tower to research and narrow it down to the slingshot artifact. Nia slips William the tip about the museum. Nyxly holds the totem in her hand. Before she can activate it, Supergirl slices it in half with her laser eyes. Nxyly barely escapes, holding on to her piece. Supergirl picks up the other. Lena states that the totem is radiating an incredible about of 5th dimensional energy. Brainy goes to inspect the totem, and is controlled by the Kryptonian witch.
  2. The Possession of Brainy: The Kryptonian Witch has possessed Brainy to give the answers they need. The totem is broken and they need to master their half of the totem to call the other half to it. To master this totem, Kara must face the gauntlet. She can only do this alone. It is supposed to cost her a major emotional cost. Supergirl goes to begin the gauntlet and we are returned to the moment when Kara became Supergirl. We see a moment after the saving of the plane and Kara looks like she's saved someone after that moment but for some reason, this is a failure in the totem's eyes. Nyxly begins her mission and we are revisited to when Nyxly attempted her coup. She kills her father in the dream and the totem says that is a failure too. More citizens of National City are influenced by the 5th dimensional energy.
  3. Dragon Battle: Team Supergirl arrives to stop the Dragon attack. Everyone is behaving oddly because of the energy. J'onn is just complimenting everyone. Alex is too aggressive. Brainy can't seem to fight at all. 5th dimensional energy has affected the team. Supergirl and Lena are the only two not necessarily affected. Nyxly also is struggling with the gauntlet. It turns out that Nyxly needs to kill the thing she loves, her brother. Supergirl and Lena sit to try and figure out her trial. Supergirl tries the trial again and fails. The scientist that wants to harness lightning is overly courageous and attempts her experiment.
  4. Witches Congress: Lena speaks with the Kryptonian witch. Lena must embrace her powers if she is to overcome the 5th dimensional magic. Supergirl dispatches the team to stop the lightning strikes while she ponders the gauntlet. Nyxly tries the trial again but doesn't kill her brother. She pleads with her brother instead. This seems to be the right course of action and Nyxly passes her test. The shard that Supergirl had starts to move toward Nyxly's half even while Supergirl holds it.
  5. Totem Trapped: Lena has a trap for the half of the totem that Supergirl has. Alex rushes off to face the scientist without her team. Supergirl figures out that Brainy is also affected with courage. Supergirl arrives to stop the lightning machine. Her team isn't functioning right and in the interest of the greater good, Supergirl tells Lena to let the totem go. This heals her team and they are able to figure out how to stop the lighting super storm. When the totem is finally repaired, Nyxly and Supergirl share each other's trials and Supergirl falls to the ground.

In the final wrap up moments, Supergirl awakes in the tower's med bay. Supergirl might have shared a psychic bond but traditional science isn't revealing the issue. At Catco, Nia and William talk about the time that William was shot. William has an idea to ask the superfriends to be embedded into their team for a new piece. Alex and Kelly debrief back at their place. Lena and Kara share a meal with each other at Kara's place. Lena tells Kara about her powers. Kara sees and feels Nyxly. She is angry. Supergirl remains hopeful and Nyxly doesn't understand why.

From the prior episode...I was one of the people who rated that episode ZERO stars thinking who else co-wrote the script, especially the last few scenes...people from the MARXIST OUTLET Black Lives Matter, Joy Reid, the so-called Reverends Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson?! Maxine Watters, Sheila Jackson Lee?! The Squad?

ANYWAY...I digress.

This episode, which I saw Saturday thanks to WPIX's airing of a Yankees game (which they won!), was quite the ride. To me Jesse and his accents and quirks were a winner. Brainy brought the comedy and that dragon? HOLY TIC TAC DOUGH! (Hope you guys get the game show reference, as I am reading about rumors that classic show of the 1970's and 80's could get a reboot).

While it's good to see a comic accurate Guardian outfit, to me and some others Kelly is a waste of time and energy.

There was no preview of the next episode Tuesday, instead I get one on PIX11 for a NY Sports show called The New York Blitz, and then one for the Season Premiere of LoT. That's Nextstar for you!

OT...last Sunday AM, my 82-year-old mom fell in her bedroom and sprained her right rotator cuff. I had to drive her to the ER...and we were there for 5 hours-plus...all kinds of tests including one for Covid (was negative). She needs me to steady her and take her to appointments and such...so I might not be able to watch live the final few episodes.

Promises, promises I guess your name should be changed to Brett Favre.

I just want Alex to have a storyline outside of Kelly, but it doesn't seem like that is going to happen in the final episodes left. Shame, really, that character deserved a better send off than what they are giving her.

I just finished watching this episode and felt it was a fun ride to be on. This one had magic, humor and flashbacks which I enjoyed. Back in the old days I would have dropped a tab of orange sunshine to enhance the experience.
Without a doubt I thought Nyxly's performance stole the show.
Supergirl was front and center most of the time and once again showed why she's the star of the show.
I had to laugh when Kelly showed up as the guardian to save the day. She's no more than a toy soldier and her presence take's away from the real super hero's.

Sorry Thalolli - you may not want to hear it but I've have said and will say it again - yes Dreamer everytime you look gets a new power and it is totally within my right to say it.

Nia is a character who was introduced as an alien with a specific powerset years ago and that powerset has been evolving over the years. Meanwhile Lena is a character who just randomly gets ridiculous unrelated powers thrown a her. She is clearly the much worse written and idiotic character who gets to be amazing in not one, but two fields, magic and science. Not only are her science powers completely ridiculous, but even though we KNOW she is not the only witch on earth immediately gets touted by the show as this amazing witch who could be equal to an imp, a character whose life revolves around magic and who exists specifically to be more powerful than Supergirl. And yet Lena who just learned about magic yesterday (mind totally unrelated to the current plot, it's not like the time intentionally went out and sought creative ways to counter the power of Nyxly, Lena just accidentally came across magic before being aware of Nyxly) is being hyped up for something they introduce with 10 episodes left in the show. Lena out-marysues Nia by miles. It's a huge double standard that Nia gets hated on while Lena gets a free pass.

Calm down Thalolli - it is just a show. You stated all of that above and I still don't agree with you and no one should have greater power than the girl of steel on her own show. I don't like the character Nia and never will. We will just agree to disagree - I certainly am not going to argue with you over a show or a fictional character. Don't upset yourself so much - Feel better soon.

Did anyone notice that Lena was wearing sneakers? I thought that was rather interesting.
I noticed and it’s a legitimate choice with the rest of the outfit. I’ve noticed that Lena’s been dressed more casualty yet still stylishly since quitting Luthor Corp which makes sense. A killer pair of heels gives many women a confidence boost and Lena doesn’t need that when working with her friends. On the other hand it could’ve been unintentional. We know actors wear comfortable shoes when their characters shoes aren’t supposed to be in the shot, maybe Katie just forget and they just used it instead of reshooting. I’ve always loved Lena’s wardrobe.

It's not often I give 6 stars, but this episode earned it. The cast all brought their A game, especially Melissa, David, Jesse, Chyler, Katie, and Peta.

I'm pretty sure that those suggesting that Kara's test relates somehow to saving Alex's plane and the decisions she made that night are correct. But having it be a choice between saving her or not seems a little too simple. I have to think that the solution is more complex. At least we now know that it will be revealed in future episodes.

The whole totem quest storyline looks really interesting, and is made more so by Kara and Nyxly being linked. William being embedded with the Superfriends also could prove interesting as to their secret identities. The final episodes are looking like they will deliver some great stories.

I could sign off on a story about how Kara doesn't have to save people all the time, is allowed to let other people get the save and is allowed to go on vacation and have fun. But that doesn't mean that this should be communicated with undercutting the show's most pivotal scene that made Kara Supergirl.

The sad part is that I wouldn't even be surprised if they did it at this point. Would make it official how they have essentially thrown Kara and Alex's relationship under the bus the last few seasons. Last meaningful story they had together was in season 4.

Good that we’ll find out why Kara failed the courage test. I don’t think it has to do with facing the press or where was Supergirl before that night. When Cat interviewed Supergirl she asked where Supergirl was during the last earthquake and fire and Kara’s answer was something like she took the decision seriously and she hadn’t been ready yet. I’m sure it has something to do with Alex but I can’t believe Kara was supposed to let her sister die. I believe Kara’s arc is to learn that she doesn’t have to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders, Zor-El said it in S6E8 and J’onn said it in this episode. I was afraid they were foreshadowing Alex’s death in S6E8 and I’d be really scared after this episode if we didn’t know she’s in Armageddon. I follow your thinking but whatever it was, was suppose to be something that happened during the time of the flight at that time she was not shouldering any responsibilities because she wasn't SuperGirl yet. Nyxly in hers had to accept what was happening to her in order to win at getting the totem. The only thing I can think of that made Kara vulnerable at that time was her sister giving her the rundown of how wrong she was to do what she did and expose herself. However Kara did not accept what her sister said and told Winn the next day - I wonder if they are saying that she needed to listen to her sister and not expose herself to the world further. Kind of like how Nyxly was unthanked by her Father which he verbally let her know. Kara was unthanked by Alex which Alex verbally made known. Almost like the totem was saying it took more courage to accept their opinions than it did to ignore what they were saying and do what you want. That to me is still an odd way of thinking.

Harry Potter vibes the seven Totems = 7 Horcruxs. Plus the two rivals having a psychic connection. Good that we’ll find out why Kara failed the courage test. Kara made the tough decision to lose the battle in order to win the war later and I appreciate that she made that call without hesitation. I feel we understand Nyxly better and I get why she feels the way she does.

Looks like we’re getting previews now but I really want a new Supergirl key art.
